Pre-Workout Eats

12 Jul

For those of you who work out in the morning, this is a question we all have.  What, if anything, should I eat before I work out?  Going to the gym without eating is like trying to drive a vehicle with no gas.  You’re going to be going nowhere and will eventually burn out your engine.  In order to maximize your workout, you must be properly fueled.  I’m not saying to go nuts at the breakfast buffet but a little something in your belly is definitely better than nothing.  Nourish your body and you will definitely get more out of your fitness regimen – including a boost in your metabolism and energy.

Here are some tips to get your wheels turning and your body burning before you start to sweat:

Almond Butter and Apple.  This combination is one of the best pre-gym power snacks.  It packs a punch of protein, fiber, healthy fat and nutrients.  It is low in calories and will fill you up without weighing you down.

Go Bananas.  If you’re like me and need to cut your apple to eat it, bananas are another option of a deliciously fiber filled fruit that is easily portable.  Spread some almond butter or natural peanut butter or if you’re travelling, grab a handful of almonds instead and voila!  Instant pre-workout snack.  Bananas provide natural sugars for energy and are packed with nutrients like vitamin A, iron and potassium – all of which can help promote bone health (something to consider for those of us pushing 40!!)

Berry the Hunger.  Berries are superfoods.  High in fiber and low in sugar, berries are loaded with antioxidants and nutrients, making them an ideal pre-workout treat when paired with some protein.  Go nuts with this one!

Seed Bowl.  If you’re not pressed for time, this is a deliciously creative take on the old-style fruit & yogurt parfait.  Reach for a handful of seeds.  Think sunflower seeds, hemp seeds, chia seeds, flaxseeds.  Toss them into a bowl (about a cup full of seeds in total) and add either a little bit of almond milk or soy yogurt.  If you can let it sit for a few minutes, the chia seeds actually thicken and will make the mixture thicker (especially if you are using almond milk).  Why not go crazy and add some berries?!?

Remember, the point of having a snack before going to the gym is to give you fuel for your workout.  Stay away from full meals or protein bars loaded with sugars and other artificial ingredients right before your sweat session because they will only weigh you down and have the opposite effect of what you’re trying to accomplish.

Have a great workout!!!

Until next time,

Have a fit and fabulous day!
